The New DBA reality
The Database Administrator is one of the most difficult positions to fill and retain. DBAs must be able to react, communicate, and plan across many different business functions. They are not easy to find and are often shockingly costly as a percentage of IT payroll. Prior to the evolution of todays comprehensive systems and greater reliance on data by 24×7 consumers, most DBAs functioned as basement DBAs, meaning that they generally were out of sight and out of mind, working on mainframe tasks associated with loading tapes, maintaining DASD, and running backup jobs. That was 20 years ago.

In the current IT landscape, DBAs must understand an ever-expanding scope of hardware and applications, which includes web servers, middleware, and relational data models. They must deal effectively with new data/indexing schemes, application loads, clustering software, and replication techniques. Proficiency in networking, operating systems, storage area networks, and Sarbanes-Oxley regulations drives their value as DBAs. They also face constant change in encryption, multiple scripting languages, data retention, spatial data types, and third-party applications. Finally, they must know data warehousing, business intelligence, advanced performance tuning, high availability, code propagation, auditing, heuristics, and I/O layouts, among others. The likelihood of finding one individual with expertise in even a few of these key areas, much less all of them, is very low.

Since the DBA is often the first point of contact for system performance issues, they must be adept at problem solving, communication, collaboration, project management, process adherence, and even financial analysis. Over the last years database technologies have developed greatly. Nowadays many platforms with different functionality and complexity levels are available to choose from. It is a common belief that the more available and diverse the solutions, the better. But what about working with many different platforms at the same time?

Administrative horror

A common characteristic of today’s enterprises is the coexistence of multiple database systems. Managing a cross-platform environment has become a real administrator’s nightmare as the management of different database systems with help of many platform-dedicated applications is a very complex task. Those working with many platforms at a time are therefore particularly vulnerable to mistakes and errors.

The success of the whole organization can rely upon efficient database management. The situation particularly applies to telecommunications and finance industries. Many cross-platform database management systems’ vendors do not seem to pay due attention to security issues, focusing only on automatic archiving. Apart from the automatic archiving and database restoring, an essential feature is repairing damaged databases. This is particularly important during any kind of migration operations. A good system must support dynamic management of databases and their components’ access privileges. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon that an employee who has left the company several months ago still has the access to the corporate information resources. This situation may be due to the fact that the currently used application does not monitor the ongoing granting of privileges, but only shows a confusing list. Another important issue related to the security is monitoring – not only of the parameters related to the disc space the database occupies, but also of the capacity and performance parameters. Detailed statistics collected in this way allow reducing the risk of damage due to overload.

To see the invisible

Although visual query builders have become a standard in this type of applications, they can still be incomprehensive. This extends the time of obtaining relevant data, whereas efficient data visualization is a crucial factor. It facilitates not only navigation in a complex environment, but also allows for better data structure representations. Some applications offer forward-engineering, which generates data structure images and allows an adjustment of its current structure to that adopted in the fixed model. Such a visualization of the database structure and a feature to display queries in the form of charts is not only a convenient service. It is also the access to information for a greater number of users, who are able to quickly find the information they need without any knowledge on how the database works. Access controls- Who sees what and when and are also self-configurable. Modify the systems and access levels as the workplace evolves and employees com and go. Automate alerts and notifications. Assign more than one investigator to a case, assign activities to anyone in the organization- their replies and completed assignments should be automatically entered into the case file.
Centralization- Keep everything in the case file, in one location and provide investigators with the ability to collaborate.
Proven capabilities- Pre-tested modules that are configured to the unique needs of each client. This means that the entire system doesn’t have to be re-tested in order to make a small change to the system.
Reporting- web enabled reports, automate reporting that populates at the identified time period, you can subscribe to a report, and once it is made, it will automatically be sent out to you. Each group at Allstate had difficulty completing reporting in the way they wanted to. All divisions should be able to ask for ad hoc reports- which Allstate can now do with i-Sight. Identify repeat offenders.
Offsite hosting- To improve security, i-Sight Case Management Software is frequently hosted at a location other than our client’s offices. This reduces the risk of your employees accessing the system and viewing information they are not entitled to see.
